Life on Purpose #79: That’s Why There’s Walgreens

I was speeding down the freeway, tapping my fingers to the beat of the music when my then, six-year-old daughter, spoke up from the back seat:

“Mom, why doesn’t money grow on trees?”

The wheels in my head started turning as fast as the ones on my Chrysler mini van. I, being the type of person who never has a simple answer, started wondering what would be the best way to bring some quick understanding and words of wisdom to my daughters question. But before I could give her a lesson on life and its realities, she interrupted my thoughts and said:

“Don’t worry about it, mom. Life is not always perfect; that’s why there’s Walgreens.”

I started laughing, and I still can’t help but smile every time I see a Walgreens commercial. It’s been eight years since then, and Walgreens is still running their commercials using this same slogan.

“Life is not always perfect; that’s why there’s Walgreens.”

Just as most of us will quickly agree with Walgreens that life is not perfect, we are also just as quick to find and point out all the imperfections in ourselves. The problem is that when we start to think about all of our faults, we also start to doubt our abilities to live a meaningful on purpose life.

And because we’re human, we let our self-doubt keep us from pursuing our life purpose, this then keeps us from making the difference in this world that only we can make.

So, wake up, snap out of it, and get to work impacting this planet for good.

“How?” you say.

Well, today’s Life on Purpose Challenge is an experiment that will begin to test the waters for you. This challenge will start to build your confidence, and it will give you a taste of the power that has been given to you to make a difference.

After you complete the exercise described below, answer the following questions:

• How did it make you feel?

• Are you smiling?

• Did your heart swell a little bit?

• Are your steps a littler lighter?

• Do you feel like humming?

• Do you feel a surge of hope?

• Would you like to experience these same feelings again?

So what is this powerful assignment?

Your mission is to do something extra special for someone else, something that you wouldn’t normally do. I suggest you do it anonymously, but this is optional.

Suggestions:

-Pay for the lunch or Starbucks treat of the person standing in line behind you.

-Send flowers or a gift certificate to a local restaurant anonymously to the janitor or receptionist at your office.

-Write a complimentary note to someone who might not normally hear or receive a lot of compliments.

-Do something nice for someone that is on your bad side.

-Ask God for inspiration. Ask Him what you can do for someone today.

Nothing pays higher dividends and fills your life with purpose like reaching out and making a difference in the lives of others.

Living an “on purpose life” is not complicated, and there aren’t a lot of complicated steps.

As we start reaching out to others, our physical makeup changes; our lives change; a new window to our soul opens up, and we start operating on a whole new frequency.

As we open up and start making changes, our purpose makes its way into our understanding, and we find that we are living the purpose-driven life we’ve always dreamed of.
