Be Gentle

I love the analogy of planting a new lawn. When planting a new lawn, great care and caution are taken. We rope it off and put up a sign:

“Do Not Walk On the Lawn.”

Every few hours we go and gently sprinkle it with life giving water. We pray for lots of sun. At the first signs of green breaking through the brown earth, we ooh and ahh. We call call our friends over and are reassured with:

“Yep, it looks like it will be a beautiful lawn.”

Yet when we try to break old habits or start something new we tend to criticize and walk all over ourselves when we don’t look like the carpet of green grass at an 100-year-old-cemetery the day after we decide to change and give up our self-defeating behaviors.

So remember we are all works in progress. Like a new lawn, treat yourself with great care. Pray lots and nourish yourself with kind and loving words of encouragement and praise. Then you too will start to see the new growth pushing through years of self-doubt.
