Sundays are interesting days at our house. I love the Sabbath. It is a day of rest, church and I can sit and read without the demands of work and the incessant ringing of the phone. My husband however dreads Sundays, every Sunday like clock work he gets the Sunday blues.
I was taken back today when our brilliant son who is here for the month, joined in with my husband who was already heavily into his Sunday woes routine, “I hate Sundays too dad, maybe its genetic. Sundays just drag, they are so slow and boring he continued I can’t stand it.” So father and son bonded as they whined together. Hey, I am all for bonding, but this?
Yet it made me think about how a lot people, dread Sundays. Perhaps it is because Sundays are quieter and less demanding. That means less distractions and more time to reflect on the status of our life, what’s missing, what we want to be different and yet feel powerless to change.
For a lot of church going people it is the feelings of inadequacy. They go to church and hear the sermon and only hear what they aren’t doing and thus they can’t feel close to a God they feel they can never please.
A wise man once said “More mortals die in ignorance of God’s true character than die in actual defiance of him.” - Neal A. Maxwell
Not knowing who God really is and risking the chance of misunderstanding Him or judging his intentions towards you is too big of a price to pay.
How do you feel when someone who doesn’t know you very well judges you wrongly and unfairly how do you feel?… Exactly! And how is the only way that person could ever really get to know you? By spending consistent, regular quality time with you.
If you can’t call the God you know a friend, your counselor, the most loving accepting person you can rely on. The one you can trust because they always tell you what you need to hear and not just what you want to hear. The one you know you can always count on when the chips are down, the one who wants the most and best for you.
Then I dare say you could be one of the mortals who die in ignorance of God’s True character.
If you dread Sundays because you are unhappy with your life set the intent to find out why. If you dread Sundays because perhaps you have misunderstood God, set your intent and start spending time with Him regularly. After all He is why you are on this planet now at this exact time and place and He knows exactly what your purpose is.
