It Was The Middle of The Night

It was the middle of the night; all of a sudden I felt like someone or something was watching me. Then I realized that the something was sitting on me. I screamed as I reached with my hand. My fingers wrapped around something furry. Now my screams were blood curling as I threw it and heard something hit the wall.

Trying to calm myself, I found my way to the light switch. By now everyone in the house was a wake. One of my daughters came running in:

“Don’t hurt him; please, he’s my friend.”

I had been completely unaware that my beautiful dark haired daughter had been hiding a rat in her bedroom closet for weeks.

“Mom you scared him.” She cooed as she tried to calm her little friend whom she had lovingly named Tiny.

I had forgotten about this episode my sister-in-law went through one creepy night, until I read about a woman named Marylou Morin.

Marylou Morin doesn’t like mice, but she has a place in her heart, home and lap for rats. “It all started about eight years, ever since her daughter brought home a lab rat named “Wicket” from Western Michigan University. The one-pound, white male rat with pink eyes would fall asleep in her lap while she watched television.”

Marylou Morin is a preschool teacher who has given a safe place to as many as 13 rats. — Her current critters are “Cubby,” “Sweet Pea” and “Little Bit.”

Even her 26-pound miniature schnauzer, Bobbi Anne, has made friends with these little creatures. He herds them around like a Border collie rounds up his sheep. And when everyone is tired he lies down and they climb up on his back.

So what do rats have to do with anything? All of us have something hiding in our “closet.” Not necessarily a big thing, but something that makes us feel like a rat that no one could possibly love if they really new who we are.

Fortunately, God is like MaryLou Morrin and her Collie Bobbi Anne. He created all of us. We are His beloved children. He finds great joy in who we are, and He always has heart, home and lap room for us.

Today’s Life on Purpose Quote:

1 Samuel 16:17: “ for the Lord Seeth not as man seeth; for a man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord lootketh on the heart.”
