All of a Sudden I Felt an Urge

Have you ever wanted to be a little crazy or do something unconventional? Nothing dangerous or immoral, just something… well something that you did as a child but would never dream of doing as an adult?

Well I had one of those moments last year. Thirty plus of us had been in leadership training all day. I love to learn, but sitting still in one place for long periods of times is not for me. I found myself starting to day dream when all of a sudden I felt an urge.

It was a crazy thought, a desire to do something that until that moment I would never have dreamed of doing. It certainly didn’t fit the business mold or image I was trying to maintain.

Yet I felt compelled to raise my hand and say: “Excuse me, I would like to do something, would that be okay with every one?”

I had obviously appeared like a perfectly average person up until that point so the facilitator’s said sure go ahead. I glanced around the room and no one else had any objections. So I did it! I started to sing “Skip to my Lou my Darling,” and then I began skipping around the room. Only I had forgotten how to skip; I was horrible. I looked like I was riding an imaginary horse. But then just like riding a bike, I was back in the saddle, skipping like a pro.

What happened next was amazing…priceless. Others in the room joined me. In only a matter of seconds half of the group was skipping and singing around the room with me. Can you imagine, grown men and women laughing and skipping? It was so much fun.

We finally all sat down, breathing heavily. Skipping is a lot of work and it’s even a little hard on weak bladders. Then everyone grew quiet as we looked at each other and realized what a magical moment we had just experienced.

We were all changed forever in just a few moments as we let our hair down and ruffled our suits and realized that we’re never to old let our hair down and be a kid.

The choice to follow my heart that day, when it said, stand up, sing and skip, took more courage than I was even aware I had.

Everyday I ask God for the courage to be who he made me to be. I tell Him that I want to be free to be me; I want to show others that it’s okay for them to be free to be who He created them to be also. Only when I asked I didn’t realize what I would need to be willing to do to start realizing such freedom.

But God did. He gave me the chance. I am so glad I took it, because after our leadership class was finished, one by one individuals in the group came up and shook my hand or hugged me. They thanked me for being so brave and crazy. They said this experience changed them. I made many new and wonderful friends that day. I truly felt the joy of being a leader as my bold move led others to experience freedom from the bondage of the fear, the fear of what other people think.

All of us are meant to lead others in someway. It may not be by leading a group of adults in your business class to the song, “Skip to My Lou.” It may be you’ll lead a fundraiser for someone whose house just burned down. Or maybe you’ll be the first to forgive someone in your family and show others it’s possible to forgive and forget.

Perhaps you will feel a desire to smile at a someone in the grocery store or start a conversation with the person in line. It really doesn’t take a lot to brighten and even change lives and it always feels so good.

If our desire is to lead others, to live our life on purpose, to live the life of opportunity that our Creator designed for us, we need to learn to listen to the heart He gave us, and be willing to take action on the desires He puts there…even if they appear to be a little crazy. So are you ready for some fun?

Today’s Life on Purpose Quotes:

“Leadership is not so much about technique and methods as it is about opening the heart. Leadership is about inspiration—of oneself and of others. Great leadership is about human experiences, not processes. Leadership is not a formula or a program, it is a human activity that comes from the heart and considers the hearts of others. It is an attitude, not a routine.”—Lance Secretan, Industry Week
“Our worst fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘who am I to be so brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?’ Actually, who are we not to be? You are a child of God: Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”—Marianne Williamson
