I was watching TV last night and a singer was talking about how nervous she was.
“This will be my first time to sing a whole set solo. I am so nervous. What if I mess up and make a fool of myself?”
As I listened to her it hit me. There is always a first time for everything, no matter who we are. Such a simple profound truth. Only I tend to forget that nobody starts out a seasoned pro.
For some reason I look at others and their accomplishments, and think, wow, wouldn’t it be great to be born with such talent? But if you say that to someone who has sweat blood and tears becoming great at their craft, sport or business, you might get slapped.
Yet most of us tend to forget that it’s only natural to be nervous, even terrified to try something new. Many of us let our fears stop us from really living and learning new things. We interpret our fears and inadequacies as signs that we aren’t good enough, instead of just first time jitters and simply a lack of experience and practice.
Remember what is was like when we were kids? Instead of being frightened we were excited. We couldn’t wait to try something new like learning to ride a bike, jump off the high dive or get our first kiss. Sure we were nervous, but it was more of an adrenaline rush. So today I am going to change the way I look at things.
